I’m over the moon! Last night, we received a certificate of recognition for our “continuous work in providing an employment pathway for Solent University alumni.”
It was one of three certificates given to exceptional nominees at this year’s Solent Engage Awards.
Ten years and one month ago, I went up on stage to collect my degree from Solent University. Fast forward to today, and my business has been commended as an employer by Solent. There’s something a bit mind-blowing about that, to be honest.
Our commitment to supporting the next generation
Since graduating, I’ve kept a close relationship with Solent University. I’ve volunteered for their mentoring scheme, I guest lecture, I’ve provided external input on course content, and I’ve been on academic panels.
We also attend skills fairs, and we’ve hired many students and recent graduates for a variety of skill-appropriate roles. Some come to us permanently, but most work with us as freelancers. For example, as Production Assistants or Junior Camera Operators. If we’re lucky, we get to work with those students and graduates frequently enough to see them blossom into seasoned professionals. It’s incredibly rewarding.
Speaking of which: What made the event for me was, throughout the whole ceremony, I was in eye-line of a TV showing a Solent Productions showreel. It happened to feature a few Solent graduates who we’ve worked with in recent years. Graduates who I understand gained some of their first non-university work experiences at Southpoint Films. Many are now working full time in the industry, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.
Whenever the day comes for me to put the lens cap back on for the final time, I think I’ll be proudest of the fact that Southpoint Films helped a not-insignificant number of young people get into the media industry, by building their skills, CVs and confidence to get their first jobs. Just like the people who gave me a chance 10 years ago. (Pay it forward, folks!)
