University of Southampton – Ocean Giants Event Coverage

The University of Southampton’s Department of Music invited us to capture a truly special evening at the historic Winchester Cathedral. Ocean Giants: Whales and the Worlds They Shape was a sold-out event that brought together science, music, art, history and law to explore the lives of whales through expert talks and artistic performances. The evening unfolded beneath a series of breathtaking whale sculptures suspended in the cathedral’s Nave, providing a dramatic and atmospheric backdrop for this one-of-a-kind experience.

Our team handled both video and photography, ensuring the entire event was documented in detail. Using a four-person crew and a multi-camera setup of two Canon C400s and a Canon R5 C, everything was time-code synced to make post-production smooth and seamless, ensuring we didn’t miss a moment of this special night.

An interior shot of a large, old cathedral with rows of people seated, facing a stage at the far end of the hall. Tall, blue and green banners depicting abstract, organic shapes hang from the high arched ceiling. Two large, dark blue whale-like structures hang near the stage. Two screens on either side of the hall, closer to the viewer, display images of whales. The overall lighting is dim, with blue and green spotlights illuminating the banners and stage.

A medium shot from behind a woman with long, brown hair and headphones, looking up and to the right. In front of her, a professional video camera on a tripod is prominently featured, with its monitors displaying a live feed. In the background, rows of people are seated in a dimly lit cathedral, with large banners hanging from the ceiling, illuminated by blue and green lights.

A man wearing a dark blue polo shirt, black-rimmed glasses, and a white and black "Vans Off The Wall" trucker hat is looking down and adjusting a black camera with a large lens. He is standing in a cathedral, illuminated by purple and blue lighting, with blurred figures and architectural details in the background.

A close-up, low-angle shot of a professional video camera on a tripod, positioned in a large cathedral. The camera has two attached monitors, both displaying a live feed of people on a stage. In the background, the intricate stone arches of the cathedral are visible, illuminated by blue and green lights, and a large blue whale-like structure hangs from the ceiling.

A view from behind a person wearing a dark polo shirt with "southpoint films" written on the back, holding a professional camera on their shoulder. They are facing away from the viewer, looking towards a dimly lit space in a cathedral where people are seated. Blue and green lighting illuminates the scene.

Five people, four men and one woman, stand in a line facing the camera, all wearing matching royal blue jumpsuits. They are in a large, old cathedral with high vaulted ceilings and large, ornate windows in the background. Several large, dark blue whale-like structures and translucent, net-like installations hang from the ceiling. The cathedral is illuminated with blue and purple lighting.

It was a fantastic project to be part of, and we’re really proud of the results!
