John Hansard Gallery – Live Stream
John Hansard Gallery is part of the University of Southampton and is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art galleries. Located in the heart of Southampton in Guildhall Square, the John Hansard Gallery hosts a rotating series of exhibitions that the public can enjoy. One of these exhibitions was “Trinity” by performance and visual artist Hetain Patel. We live-streamed a panel discussion with Hetain and his colleagues, where they discussed his exhibition at the gallery.
The live stream was captured using three cameras. Two cameras focused on the panellists and one on a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter. The gallery streamed it directly to YouTube and also shared it on their social media profiles.
Accessibility and inclusion were big motivators for this live stream. Since the event took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, it allowed people to tune in remotely if they didn’t feel comfortable attending in person.
The inclusion of the BSL interpreter was a huge improvement for accessibility. Live streams can’t benefit from subtitling in the same way that pre-recorded videos can.
