We don’t know about you but it feels like 2024 has flown by!  It’s hard to believe how much we’ve packed into the year at Southpoint Films, from filming training videos on board a cruise ship in the canaries to live streaming from Mars (sort of), we’ve had the privilege of working  on projects that have taken us far and wide.

Why not join us as we revisit some of the unforgettable projects that defined our 2024? From big adventures to closer-to-home successes, these moments highlight what a truly remarkable year it’s been!

Live Broadcast for STEM Learning’s Mars Day

We’re kicking off our list with a project that was, quite literally, out of this world!

We had the incredible opportunity this year to broadcast live from Goonhilly Earth Station in Cornwall for Mars Day 2024. Hosted by ESERO-UK and STEM Learning, this event was a celebration of space exploration that brought together experts and science enthusiasts for an event to captivate school children across the country.

Our role was to deliver a full day of live streaming, featuring studio-based presenters, fascinating interviews with leading science figures like Tim Peake, and live dial-ins from experts around the world. The event also included virtual panel discussions, engaging Q&A sessions with European Space Agency astronauts, and a truly jaw-dropping highlight: live images from Mars, streamed as close to real-time as technology allows. While we can’t take credit for capturing the footage of the red planet, facilitating such an ambitious “live link” was a thrill we won’t forget!

Mars Day 2024 was an amazing opportunity to showcase the science and technology behind space exploration and we were proud to be part of this stellar event.

Music Festival Camera Package at Boomtown Fair

A camera operator wearing headphones and a cap films a scene with a professional video camera mounted on a tripod. The background is lit with red and white stage lights, and there is visible haze or smoke, suggesting a live event or performance setting.

This year, we returned to Boomtown Fair, one of the UK’s largest and most impressive music festivals.

As with last year, our team managed live camera coverage for two of the festival’s most iconic stages: Grand Central and Origin. Over the weekend, our crew of eight expertly operated nine cameras, delivering stunning visuals to the LED screens on both stages. The energy was electric, and it was an experience we won’t forget!

What made this year extra special though, was our collaboration with Canon, who supplied us with additional camera gear. This included two pre-release C400s for Grand Central, complemented by a range of lenses, PTZ cameras and controllers. After seeing the incredible footage, we couldn’t resist making the investment in two of these game changing cameras, and they are already making their mark on various projects.

We can’t wait to bring this cutting-edge camera equipment to more festivals across the UK next year!

Event Coverage at RecFest

A group of eight people stand in front of large red letters spelling "REC FEST" with a banner below reading "CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF RECFEST." The scene is outdoors with a grassy field, a red tent, and trees in the background. Several people are walking and mingling in the area, indicating a festival or event atmosphere

We were thrilled to provide event coverage for RecFest this summer at the legendary Knebworth Park.

This one-of-a-kind annual festival-style conference celebrates the talent acquisition industry, and our eight-strong crew was there to capture the action across an impressive 11 stages. From roaming photo and video coverage to  drone footage, interviews, on-site editing, and an all-day photo booth, we documented every moment.

We also brought along our brand-new outside broadcast trailer, a purpose-built solution designed for seamless live production and quick-turnaround video at music festivals and outdoor events. It was the perfect addition to an unforgettable day!

Safety Training Videos for TUI’s Marella Cruises

At the beginning of 2024, we had the pleasure of working with TUI’s Marella Cruises to produce a series of safety training videos onboard one of their ships in the Canaries. (Ok, the filming actually took place at the end of 2023, so it just missed last year’s round-up – and we did all of the editing this year!)

Over the course of eight days on board, our video crew had fun capturing every aspect of the ship’s operations, including the engine room, laundry facilities, kitchen, and swimming pool. The purpose of this project was to highlight the various onboard safety protocols and procedures. From safety drills and walkthroughs, to interviews and glimpses of onboard entertainment. We ensured a comprehensive portrayal of the ship’s safety culture.

The finished videos are now being utilised internally, to provide crew members and staff across the fleet with essential safety guidance and support.

Case studies for Dentally and Software of Excellence (Henry Schein One)

IMG 0004

Throughout 2024 we travelled across the UK and Ireland  to capture a library of case studies for Dentally and Software of Excellence, both part of Henry Schein One. We’ve produced 11 case studies so far, with more lined up for 2025!

Each case study has involved interviews with practice staff, tours of the surgeries, patient-staff interactions, and chair-side scenes. The videos focus on key themes such as team culture, patient experience, practice efficiency, and business growth. We’ve even seen how some dental practices have been adopting cutting-edge AI to improve the accuracy of their care.

This project stands out for us due to its geographical ambition. There are few places we’ve left unturned this year – Liverpool, Sheffield, Dublin, Aberdeen, London, and more. It’s been a fun challenge for our Production Coordinator Jamie to schedule the shoots alongside other regional projects we’ve been working on. On top of that, she also took the lead on briefing both our crew and the dental practices, to make sure that everyone knew what to expect on each filming day. A real flex of her strengths!

Seeing the collection of case studies grow throughout the year has been really rewarding, and we’re excited to continue this work next year.

Accommodation Videos and Live Streaming for the University of Southampton

SPF 6744

We worked on several exciting projects with the University of Southampton Accommodation team this year.

Our work included a live virtual accommodation tour, featuring a panel of student ambassadors who shared their insights and top tips with prospective students. We also produced a series of videos showcasing various accommodation sites and facilities, with the videos being featured on screens in accommodation common rooms and the student life hub. Additionally, we also created a guided accommodation tour video, led by a student presenter, providing a personal and informative look at what life in university housing is really like.

It was great to see the wide variety of sites that the university has to offer the students, and even more fun to get our drones out at many of these locations too. We love that these projects highlight the variety of property and facilities style videos we can do, blending live production and promotional video content, to deliver impactful results.

Live Stream for the Association for Breastfeeding Mothers

This summer we collaborated with Destiny Events who asked us to provide video production, live streaming and A/V services for the Association for Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM) conference at Queen Mary University of London.

Our main responsibility at this event was to live stream the event for attendees who couldn’t be there in person. This involved supplying cameras, vision mixing equipment, audio gear, and, of course, the staff to operate everything.

On the day, we provided two cameras with operators as well as a remote-controlled PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) camera, video switching and audio mixing, pre-recorded video and graphics playback, and a PA system. We also provided a live dial-in function for two remote presenters who couldn’t be there in-person, which included facilitating a live Q&A so that they could take questions from the audience; a real technical achievement!

We also worked to enhance the experience for online viewers, streaming the event via Vimeo and using Slido to encourage audience interaction. After the event, we hosted the sessions on our Vimeo account, allowing attendees to watch the sessions on demand.

This was a really insightful event to work on and was just one of many conferences we provided similar services for this year, including several NHS conferences.

Social Media Pantomime Teasers for BH Live

IMG 0223

We wrapped up the year with some panto fun, filming content for BH Live at Jack and the Beanstalk at Bournemouth Pavilion and Snow White at Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

Oh no, you didn’t! –  Oh yes, we did!

We created 15–20 short, snappy videos for each pantomime to dazzle audiences on social media in the run-up to Christmas. It was an interesting change from our usual  work – after all, how often do you get to film a giant beanstalk or a magic mirror?

Meeting the cast and exploring the sets and props was a real heigh-ho of our year!

As always…

…there were so many amazing and unforgettable projects to choose from, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has contributed to making it another successful year.

Have you got a project in mind for next year? Whether it’s live streaming, video production, or event coverage, we’d love to help bring your vision to life. Get in touch with us today and let’s start planning!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
