Boomtown 2024: Behind The Scenes Of Our Outside Broadcast
At Southpoint Films, we love nothing more than combining our passion for cameras with the energy of live music. Over the years, we’ve provided outside broadcast services for festivals of all sizes, delivering real-time camera feeds to LED screens across multiple stages. Whether it’s a small family-friendly festival or one of the country’s biggest events, we bring expertise, flexibility, and cutting-edge technology to ensure festival-goers experience performances in the best possible way.
Why Work with a Dedicated Camera Supplier?
If you’re thinking about bringing a dedicated camera supplier to your festival, it’s important to understand the difference between working with a specialist like us versus relying on an LED screen provider’s basic camera setup or using a traditional broadcast company. Our team specialises in festival filming, meaning we know exactly how to create a visually immersive experience that complements the performances on stage.
For many attendees, what’s displayed on the screens is what they see, and if the visuals aren’t engaging or high quality, it can impact their perception of the festival as a whole. That’s why we focus on delivering dynamic, high-quality footage that enhances the energy of every performance.
Our Work at Boomtown Festival
One of the festivals we’re particularly proud to work with is Boomtown, one of the most innovative and visually stunning festivals in the UK. For the past few years, we’ve provided camera packages across two major stages: Grand Central and Origin.
At Grand Central, we managed a fully operated camera setup, meaning our team worked from backstage in a dedicated control area to switch between camera angles, ensuring seamless visuals throughout each performance. This stage featured a variety of acts, from DJs and MCs to large live bands, requiring a dynamic approach to capture every moment effectively.
The Origin stage, in contrast, was primarily DJ-based, making it a more self-service setup. Touring VJs had control over camera selections, allowing them to integrate real-time footage with their own visuals. We provided remotely operated cameras that could be positioned and controlled as needed, giving artists and their teams the flexibility to tailor their visual presentation.
Flexibility and Quality: The Southpoint Films Difference
When working backstage at a festival, we know that flexibility is key. Whether we’re operating from our dedicated outside broadcast trailer, a side-of-stage setup, or a simple gazebo, we tailor our approach to the needs of each festival.
While flexibility is essential, quality is always our top priority. We continuously invest in the latest camera technology, from robotic PTZ cameras to cinematic cameras that capture stunning visuals. At this year’s Boomtown, we were thrilled to work with pre-release cameras from Canon, delivering some of the most breathtaking images we’ve ever seen. In fact, we were so impressed that we’ve added them to our equipment lineup for future events!
