A Festival in Focus – Our Second Outside Broadcast Case Study with Canon
A large festival like Boomtown is a unique challenge for any production team. This festival is a sprawling, immersive world with tremendous production ambition across the board. Cameras are no exception.
Our cameras need to be capable of handling everything from bright daylight to complex, late-night atmospheric lighting. This is why we were delighted to reunite with Canon following our work together in 2024.
Last year, we debuted a brand new multi-camera workflow that utilised Canon’s full video camera lineup. This year we took things to the next level.
Cutting-Edge Robotic Solutions
For round two, we stepped things up a gear with the use of two ZANUS “Pan-Tilt” heads. These innovative robotic solutions transformed our Canon cinema cameras into PTZs, unlocking greater quality, especially in low light.
These ZANUS heads were used in tandem with Canon Cinema EOS C400 and C80 cameras, as well as Canon’s USM Z lenses. This combination allowed us to deliver beautiful cinematic visuals with all of the benefits of traditional PTZ cameras. For example, having one operator able to control multiple cameras at once.
Lessons Learned
At Southpoint Films, we pride ourselves on delivering fantastic value for our clients. So when we find technologies that can deliver industry-leading images within sensible budgets, we get very excited.
Being able to use this sort of robotic technology for one of our real music festival clients was incredible. Especially when it integrates so beautifully with our existing Canon ecosystem. We can’t wait to bring it to more of our projects.
We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Canon for recognising our work and inviting us to try this workflow. Seeing our team’s dedication to high-quality outside broadcast highlighted once again by such a prestigious brand is a proud milestone for us. If you’re interested in how we can bring this level of technical expertise to your next event, we’d love to start a conversation. Get in touch.
